Playground Ball On Hamburger Mold

Mixed media, 2008

Part of Alyssa’s ongoing Toys & Tools series, currently on display in our kitchen. And the family room, play room, den, stairwell, bathroom, bedroom, and garage.

(And the backyard.)

This is truly a bold statement about the modernity of childhood and the ethics of meat-based consumption. I find Alyssa's work powerful in its stark honesty; she endeavors to hide nothing but at the same time speaks deeply from her own experience, which translates into an often-intriguing and never-obvious sense of composition.

Also, I think she just invented a crossbreed of kickball and tee-ball.
